American Mahjong Tile Size Guide
SIZE GUIDE
Why American Mahjong tiles are smaller and thinner.
American Mahjong tile dimensions are shaped by rack-based play, accessory compatibility and the established retail ecosystem around racks, pushers and carrying cases.
Why American Mahjong tiles can be thinner
American Mahjong is commonly played with racks and pushers. The tiles sit in rack rails instead of standing freely as a wall, so they can be thinner and lighter without losing playability.
Many mainstream American Mahjong sets are built around compact tiles close to 30 mm tall and about 13 mm thick. This format fits the accessory ecosystem: racks, pushers, tile bags, travel cases and storage boxes.
A Chinese Mahjong tile that is around 15 mm thick may not fit a standard American Mahjong rack rail. This is a structural compatibility difference, not just a visual style choice.
Why Chinese Mahjong tiles are usually larger and thicker
Chinese Mahjong is usually played without racks. Tiles need to stand and form walls on their own, so the base must be stable and the tile body is often thicker.
Larger 36 mm tiles are easier to read across the table and suit faster table play, but the larger body changes packaging, shipping weight and accessory requirements.
Common American Mahjong size options
| Format | Metric size (L × W × H) | Inch size (L × W × H) | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact | 30 × 23 × 13 mm | 1.18 × 0.91 × 0.51 in | Mainstream retail sets, safest rack compatibility and travel-friendly packaging. |
| Custom compact | 30 × 22 × 13.5 mm | 1.18 × 0.87 × 0.53 in | Custom themed sets where a slightly narrower tile face and thicker hand feel are preferred. |
| Ultra-thin | 32 × 24 × 5 mm | 1.26 × 0.94 × 0.20 in | Sleek, lightweight retail or travel-style sets; should be paired with suitable racks and pushers. |
| Slim | 36 × 25 × 11 mm | 1.42 × 0.98 × 0.43 in | Thin-format design that should be paired with suitable racks and pushers. |
| Large | 38 × 28 × 19 mm | 1.50 × 1.10 × 0.75 in | Premium positioning, easier readability and stronger hand feel. |
| Oversized | 40 × 30 × 21 mm | 1.57 × 1.18 × 0.83 in | Senior-friendly or low-vision positioning where accessibility is a selling point. |
| Mini | 20-26 mm height range | 0.79-1.02 in height range | Travel, novelty or gift use; should be clearly positioned as secondary play sets. |
Practical recommendation
For a first commercial American Mahjong project, the compact 30 mm format is usually the safest choice because it is compatible with common racks, pushers and cases.
Use the ultra-thin 32 × 24 × 5 mm format when the project needs a sleek, lightweight tile profile. Because the tile height is only 5 mm / 0.20 in, rack and pusher compatibility should be tested during sampling.
Use large or oversized tiles when readability, tactile experience and premium gift positioning matter more than compact packaging.
